Lesson 13 It is only me
1.She was too excited to do any housework that morning, for in the evening she would be going to a fancy party with her husband.
句型提炼：too + adj. + to…, for …
太…而不能，因为…
e.g. Last night I was too excited to go to sleep, for I would give a speech in public the next day.
Lesson 14 A noble gangster
1.There was a time when the owners of shops and business in Chicago had to pay large sums of money to gangsters in return for ‘protection’.
解释：There was a time.为主句。when后引导的是一个定语从句。large sums of money一大笔钱，in return for 作为…的回报
句型提炼：There was a time when…
曾经有一个时期…
e.g. There was a time when girls were not valued as much as boys.
2. As long ago as the fourteenth century, an Englishman, Sir John

解释：An Englishman Sir made the remarkable discovery为主句。 John Hawkwood作an Englishman的同位语，that之后的从句为同位语从句，would rather…than…宁愿…而不愿
句型提炼：Sb. made the discovery that…would rather…than…
…发现…宁愿…也不愿…
The discovery was made that people would rather die than compromise in the face of the enemy.
Lesson 15 Fifty pence worth of trouble
1.Mum or dad, of course, provide a regular supply of pocket money, but uncles and aunts are always a source of extra income.
解释：of course 作插入语，provide a supply of pocket money 提供一些零花钱。provide和supply都含有提供的意思，在这里，provide为动词， supply为名词，regular supply长期供应。a source of extra income这里指零花钱的来源。
补充：provide和supply的用法补充：
provide sb. with sth. = provide sth. for sb.
supply sb. with sth. = supply sth. to sb.

1.Ashamed of having acted so rashly, Dimitri apologized to Aleko for having accused him.
解释：be ashamed of 对…感到羞愧，apologize to sb. for doing sth.就某事向某人道歉
句型提炼：ashamed of…, sb. apologized to sb. for doing sth.
羞愧于…， 某人就某事向某人道歉
e.g. Ashamed of being late again, I apologized to him for having kept him waiting for such a long time.
